ASSOC. PROF. JAMES BEATTIE

Guest talk

From Plunder to Archaeology and Antiques Markets: Collection, Exhibition, and Appreciation of Chinese artefacts in New Zealand, 1860-1940s a talk by Associate Professor James Beattie, Victoria University of Wellington. This talk takes us from the invasion of imperial Peking in 1900 and an archaeological dig in the deserts of central China, to the bustling antiques markets of jazz-age Shanghai to examine how Chinese objects make their way to New Zealand, who collected them, and why? It also asks what have the New Zealand public and artists made of them here?
