There are many workshops that use paint. Below are some examples from the sections on Portraits, Land & Sea Landscapes, Animals and Still Lifes.
Tight and Loose Level 1-4
This programme looks at the variety of ways artists apply paint to the canvas. The workshop will feature a double image where students paint the same subject using ‘tight’ brushstrokes and ‘loose’ finger painting using a special double dip technique.
Two Colour Still Lifes Level 3-4
Using one dark colour and white students learn to use tone to portray objects. One highlighted feature in the work in a complementary colour gives the picture a zing.
Cat Portraits Level 1-4
A large range of laminated pictures provides the inspiration and ideas for painting cats.
Animal Portraits Level 1-4
Painting close up pictures of animals provides an opportunity to create fur textures using paint and printing techniques.
Land, Sea Sky Level 1-4
Use three different techniques to depict land, sea and sky.
Moody Land and Sea Level 1-4
Students will look at a variety of landscapes to discover how the weather and time of day affects the mood of the scene. The workshop is all about taking risks and letting go of the tight control. Will the end result be a complete disaster or a fantastic moody, stormy scene?
Sea Cliffs Level 3-4
Painting with a focus on shifting colour from dark to light to create the illusion of showing a group of overlapping cliffs by the sea.
Rockscapes Level 3-4
Painting with a focus on shifting colour from dark to light to create the illusion of showing a group of rounded rocks on sand by the sea against a deep blue sky.
Through a Window Level 1-4
In this workshop the landscape scene is seen through a window with still life items sitting on the window sill.
Fenced Off View Level 1-4
The foreground for this landscape scene is a person leaning against a see through fence.
Rangi and Papa Level 2-4
Reach back to the depths of time with the Maori creation story of Papatuanuku and Ranginui. How can you show land and sky as Earth Mother and Sky Father?
Hillscapes Level 3-4
The focus is on painting shifting colour from dark to light to create the illusion of showing a group of overlapping hills or mountains. A 3-D cut-out is added later to create a focal point. Great workshop.
Silly Hat Portraits Level 1-4
Look at yourself in a mirror wearing a silly hat. It’s amazing how a hat makes a self portrait even more fun to paint.
Waiting for the Train Level 1-4
The starting point for this workshop is James Tissot’s Waiting For the Train. Students will take turns to pose in costumes amidst a pile of suitcases.
Emotional Portraits Level 1-4
Portraits are created that have an emphasis on faces showing strong emotion.
Double Dip Portraits Level 2-4
Let colours do their own mixing when you double dip your finger in paint. Use your finger to trace out the features of the face. Stick to the rules. Only double dipped fingers allowed.
Hidden Faces Level 3-4
A face is half hidden by something such as a leafy branch, a butterfly, a flower, a floating seahorse, a bird in flight, a hand, a railing, etc.
Monochromatic Portraits Level 4
In this workshop the entire portrait is painted with one or two dark colours and white. Students will be surprised how much they will learn about tone using such a limited palette.
Split down the Middle Portraits Level 4
Half of a face cut from a magazine ad is stuck on to a piece of paper and paint is used to match and complete the portrait.
