Most Visits are Free!
Apart from a small entry fee for big touring exhibitions and a small charge for materials for some workshops all visits are FREE.
Book Early
Book early to ensure that you get the day, date and time that fits your timetable.
Programmes
New programmes are being added to the list all the time usually as a result of special requests from schools. Each programme is adapted to suit the needs of your class. Mail-outs are sent to local schools each term but probably the easiest way to keep up with what is new is to put this website in your Favourites list.
Morning or Afternoon
The times for your visit are negotiable. Most programmes include a workshop component so allow a whole morning or afternoon for your outing – about two to two and a half hours for most age groups and perhaps one and a half hours for new entrants and year ones. Secondary school classes from outside Dunedin are welcome to come to the Gallery for the whole day. The Gallery opens to the public at 10 am but I can let you in earlier at the front entrance from 9:30 am.
Adult Helpers
Adult helpers on a visit will usually be fully engaged assisting in the classroom workshop. School visits are not suitable for pre-schoolers.
Parking
Parking is available at the DCC car park in upper Moray Place. This has easy access to the Octagon. There is also a car park in lower Moray Place just down from First Church Car Park. The cost is 80c per half hour. It may be possible to park a school van at the rear entrance to the Art Gallery. This will need to be arranged when you book your visit. A bus can be parked at the bus stop on Stuart Street just above the upper Octagon right beside St Paul’s Cathedral
Don’t Get Dressed Up
Painting aprons are provided but it is best if the students wear older clothes for a paint or print workshop.
Class List
A class list is useful in case of a fire evacuation.
Refreshments
For morning or afternoon tea, bring a box with the children’s drink bottles and snacks - all labelled.
Tea and coffee will be provided for adults during the workshop session. A tap with filtered water is available to replenish drink bottles. Please bring disposable cups for children without drink bottles.
A Lunch Venue
The Octagon is a great place for lunch…when it’s fine. We can provide an indoor lunch venue right
here at the Gallery. There are toilets handy and a tea/coffee facility.
Taking Photographs
You are welcome to record your visit with still or moving images. Please let me know on arrival if you want to photograph or film your students in exhibition spaces. There will be some restrictions because of copyright issues.
Follow Up
The best way to get maximum benefit from a visit is to talk with your students about what they learned from their visit while it is still fresh. Look at the artworks produced in the workshop session and talk about what parts were the most successful. Written material provided with booked visits will have guidelines for follow up activities.
