Toi Maori 


Students studying Toi Maori themes will investigate artworks and view video footage that relate to the topic of study. Your class will be greeted in Maori and you have the option of making this occasion more formal by preparing a waiata to sing in response. Choose from the workshops listed below:

Kupe and the Octopus        Level 1-4
Kupe chased a troublesome octopus and discovered a new land.

Toi Maori Exhibition        Level 1-4
Curate your own Toi Maori Exhibition.

Yellow Edge Maori Design        Level 1-4 BR> Strong bold designs based on Maori imagery are brought to life using dye, pastel and ink.

Pounamu Patterns        Level 1-4
A range of koru templates are used to create designs in beautiful greenstone colours.

Colourful Korus        Level 1-4
Warm and cool colours contrast with each other to bring a maze of koru patterns to life.

Rangi and Papa        Level 1-4
Illustrate the dramatic story about the separation of Ranginui (Sky Father) from Papatuanuku (Earth Mother).

Maui and the Fingers of Fire        Level 1-4
Your students will love participating in the play that brings this dramatic story to life and illustrating a scene from the story. Great fun!

Maui and the Great Fish        Level 1-4
Enjoy the story and prepare for a great stingray workshop. Maui Snares the Sun        Level 1-4
This is probably the most well-known Maui story and it is perfect for great art making.

Folded paper Maori cloaks come to life with feathers, fur and designs sewn with wool.

Decorative lizards crawl over a patterned background.

Shaded Maori Design        Level 3-4
Contemporary and traditional meet in this workshop which used tonal drawing to give a drawing the appearance of being as Maori carving.

Toi Maori Fashion        Level 3-4
Create fashion using Maori designs and emblems.

Black Ink Koru Fish        Level 3-4
Indian ink is used to outline fish with beautiful koru scale patterns.

A Meeting of Cultures        Level 3-4
Create artworks using images that symbolise both European and Maori cultures in colonial times in Aotearoa New Zealand.

NGAI TAHU LEGENDS:

Aoraki’s Canoe        Level 1-4
Aoraki and his brothers huddled on their overturned waka for such a long time they turned to stone. The legend describes how the South Island was formed.

Kopuwai the Water Swallower        Level 2-4
Can a young girl outfox the terrifying monster called Kopuwai and his pack of two- headed dogs? Your students will enjoy acting out this story on your visit.

Pouakai the Man-Eater        Level 2-4
A giant bird swoops down from the mountains and gobbles up people. Ruru comes up with a daring plan to destroy the monster but will it work?

Te Kapo the Taniwha        Level 3-4
This legend explains why the South Island is subject to natural disasters such as earthquakes, avalanches and floods.

Matau the Giant of Wakatipu        Level 3-4
This legend explains why the water level of Lake Wakatipu rises and falls Many times each day.
