Artificial Wonderland

8th Dec 2018 - 12th May 2019

In March 2018 Yang Yongliang (b.1980 Shanghai) spent time in Dunedin as part of the DPAG International Visiting Artist programme. Trained in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting, Yang uses digital technologies to explore the intersection between these traditional artforms and his own contemporary position. Through photography and video, Artificial Wonderland creates a space to examine urbanisation, globalisation and the contemporary relationship to the landscape.

Artificial Wonderland includes Yang’s most recent video series, Views of Water (2018), constructed out of footage of the ocean, rivers and lakes shot during his time in New Zealand.  Taking an historic reference point from works by the Song Dynasty painter Ma Yuan (c1160-1225), Yang’s compositions present a view of the environment that is both timeless and located strongly in the present moment.
