Radhika Raghav Ph.D. candidate in Art History and Visual Culture, University of Otago, will talk on an aspect of her thesis that relates to the influential late nineteenth-century artist, Raja Ravi Varma, and how his painted heroines became models for both the Indian Nationalist politics and Indian cinema. Radhika also discusses the fact that mainstream Hindi cinema continues to draw on Varma’s images even 100 years later.
