William Matthew Hodgkins Memorial Lecture: The “sheer efficiency” of Ian Scott’s Lattice No. 45 (1978). Winner of the Benson and Hedges Art Award in 1978, and immediately acquired by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Ian Scott’s Lattice No. 45 was also commended in Art New Zealand by critic Gordon H. Brown for its “sheer efficiency” and “self-contained nature”. In this lecture, Ed Hanfling, art historian, seeks to demonstrate just how efficient the painting really is. But he argues too that it condenses and synthesises such an immense range of the artist’s feelings and responses – to things, environments, and to life – that it can no longer be described as a “self-contained” abstraction.
