HILARY RADNER

WMH Lecture 2018

William Matthew Hodgkins Memorial Lecture “MOVING-IMAGE ART AND THE ‘DEATH OF CINEMA’: Everything You Always Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask. Guest speaker Hilary Radner, Professor Emeritus of Film and Media Studies at the University of Otago, explores the ways in which time-based installations may challenge conventional definitions of art, weighing up why and how this break-down in categorization contributes to what film theorists like Raymond Bellour have called the ‘death of cinema’. In the course of the talk, Professor Radner addresses a number of works, including Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (Douglas Gordon, Philippe Parreno, 2006), on display in the Gallery.
