Ethel Walker and Imogen Taylor

In support of Dunedin Pride Month 2024 DPAG Curator Lucy Hammonds will lead a relaxed guided tour.

This tour will look at an artwork by Dame Ethel Walker (1861 – 1951), a Scottish painter who is now celebrated as one of the earliest lesbian artists of her time to explore sexuality openly in her artworks. Attendees will view Walker’s work alongside that of Imogen Taylor, a painter based in Tāmaki Makaurau and a former Frances Hodgkins Fellow, whose painting Another word for Abyss (2019) sets out to queer the straight edges of modernist abstraction. Both artworks are cared for in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery collection and are on show in our current exhibition Huikaau – where currents meet.

After the talk try your hand at live portraiture! Take inspiration from Walker’s portraiture style, and try sketching a live portrait of a friend, a date or a willing stranger. Or test your patience and try out being the one sitting for a portrait. All materials provided, bring your own if you prefer.
