The Walters Estate and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery are delighted to announce a partnership that will see the Walters collection held by the Estate transferred to the Gallery under a long-term loan agreement. This substantial collection includes a wealth of material ranging from the artist’s notebooks and research material, through works on paper and collages, to major paintings and many series of works produced by the artist during a lifetime of work spanning five decades.
The Director of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Cam McCracken, says: “The Walters collection is one of the country’s great cultural assets and in addition to housing and caring for it, the Gallery is committed to working in partnership with the Estate to ensure that it is in play in the culture through scholarly research, publishing and exhibitions reaching out to the widest possible audience.” He adds: “The collection will give the Gallery another distinguishing point of difference, this time as the sole repository of the astounding body of art and archival material that makes up the Walters collection.”
The Estate has been pleased to be able to work so successfully with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery which has been so keen and supportive to ensure that Walters’ artistic legacy continues to shape and inform the direction of contemporary art in New Zealand now and in the future.
