From Here to There: An Otago Tale

WMH Memorial Lecture with Grahame Sydney

Sunday 20 August | 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society holds a lecture each year to commemorate the work of William Mathew Hodgkins. He was the founding member of the Otago Art Society and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society that established our gallery; the oldest public art gallery in the country. Hodgkins was passionate about art, determined and influential in tapping into the wealth in Dunedin.

The 2023 edition welcomes guest lecturer this year is Sir Grahame Sydney who will give an overview of his illustrious career. This talk, says Grahame, is about the progress of a conventional middle class Dunedin boy from the Kew Hill, through to an unexpected lifetime career of professional art, nearly all of it spent in Otago.

How did that happen? And what have I learned along the way? Now aged 75, I'll talk about what I think matters and illustrate the journey with selected paintings from more than 5 decades of work.
