Frances Hodgkins's War Art

FREE Talk by Elizabeth Eastmond

Saturday 24 June | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

'Frances Hodgkins's War Art' focuses on the painting Houses and Outhouses, Purbeck (1938).

Artist and critic John Piper used the phrase 'war art' to describe this and related works, including some in the current exhibition Between Croft and Corfe. He explained this was not the conventional meaning of war art, but references Hodgkins’s use of metaphor. This notion is explored, together with the painting's role as a nocturne and major contribution to the Neo-Romantic Movement.
