He Taoka Kei Āku Rika – There Are Treasures At My Hands

Tikumu weaving demonstration and kōrero with Hamuera Manihera

Learn about the amazing properties and uses of the tikumu plant with kairāraka, Hamuera Manihera. Tikumu, also known as mountain daisy, is a small flowering plant often found growing in high altitudes. It is considered a taoka species by Kāi Tahu and it’s leaves have been long treasured by Māori weavers to create elegant, and weather proof garments.

Join Hamuera for a kōrero on the revitalisation of tikumu use through his own weaving practice, and a demonstration of how tikumu is prepared for use.

Hamuera Manihera (Ngāti Kuia, Ngāti Koata, Ngāti Apa, Ngāi Tahu) is a weaver who most recently has been dedicated to revitalising the practice of harvesting and weaving with tikumu. Hāmuera is the Kaitiaki Taonga Māori - Māori Taonga Collections Manager at Nelson Provincial Museum. In 2023 Hamuera completed a kahu tikumu, (a cloak made using tikumu leaves) named Te Heiwi, which is now cared for at Te Papa Tongarewa.
