Quill Making and Calligraphy

Workshop led by Prof. Simone Celine Marshall

Become a medieval scribe! Learn how to cut and prepare your own quill from a feather, and some medieval calligraphic lettering. This is a one-hour hands-on introductory workshop with no prior experience necessary and requires use of knives.

Suitable for ages 12 and up, all participants under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver for the duration of the session.

Simone Celine Marshall is Professor of English and Head of the School of Arts at the University of Otago. Her research includes medieval poetry and the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, as well as hands-on research into medieval calligraphy, manuscript making, and bookbinding. 

This workshop is presented in support of the exhibition Paradise of Imagination: Medieval & Modern Encounters.
