Chaptered
18 May 2024 - 20 October 2024
Chaptered considers the conversations that unfolded between this group of works drawn from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and loan collections. Each is comprised of multiple parts or panels – narrative fragments, chapters, or snatches of information that come together into a single composition. Jeffrey Harris’ Winter Road (1985) echoes a classical three-part narrative, each panel of the triptych centred on a particular character and moment in time. Madame descending the staircase (2016), an installation by Madame and the Bastard, builds tension and suspense across its six panels, the protagonist remaining just outside the frame. Fiona Connor’s Community Notice Boards are careful recreations of public bulletin boards - talking back to icons, altarpieces, and other sites of community exchange found across art history. These ideas are echoed in Ralph Hotere’s painting February, May and the Birds of Ice. The Moon Drowns in its Voices of Water (1970), which in its title reveals a moment of creative exchange between Hotere and his friend, the poet Bill Manhire. Viewed together, new ideas emerge in the space between the different compositions and concepts, providing the viewer with the opportunity to create their own journey through the chapters.
