Exploded Worlds
Works from the DPAG Collection
6 February 2016 - 23 July 2017
Established in 1884, the Dunedin Public Art Gallery is New Zealand's oldest public art gallery. The richness and quality of its collection remains a testament to a city that placed art and ideas at the heart of its community. Exploded Worldsputs this collection under the microscope; using an analytical view as a means of establishing new meeting points, challenging expectations, and celebrating the power of artistic vision.
This exhibition offers an exploded view of an artwork – considering properties such as colour, scale, material, contrast and experience as different ways to think about works in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery collection. While not always explicit, the examination of these qualities offers a chance to reconsider or reimagine artworks across time and media; casting new light over a range of works extending from the late 16th century to the present day.
