In 2014 Dunedin Public Art Gallery established a biennial exhibition programme that explores aspects of contemporary art in Ōtepoti Dunedin. Ranging from group exhibitions through to new artist projects, this exhibition series has supported and showcased the work of 20 artists to date. Suite 2023 is the fifth project in this series, marking a decade of the DPAG Biennial Contemporary Dunedin Programme. Suite 2023 brings together four new solo exhibitions from Kate Fitzharris, Madison Kelly (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, Pākehā), Motoko Kikkawa, and Hannah Joynt and Jane Venis, who work collaboratively as Small Measures.
Kate Fitzharris plays with scale, material and form, unpacking and celebrating the relationships and histories carried by objects across time. Madison Kelly uses drawing and percussion as embodied entry points for learning and sharing whakapapa of our mokomoko/lizards, kōhatu/rocks and wai/water. Through fluid and digital media, Motoko Kikkawa presents a personal skyscape that is shaped by a responsiveness to our current world and its possible futures; while Small Measures uses humour and irony to highlight the absurdity of contemporary life – the overregulation, dysfunction and frustration found in everyday tasks and systems.
