'They leave me alone down here'
WILLIAM MATHEW HODGKINS MEMORIAL LECTURE 2020
Guest speaker: Vincent O'Sullivan
Every year the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society offers a Memorial Lecture on William Mathew Hodgkins, who founded what was to become the Otago Art Society in 1875. The Society started collecting pictures under his presidency in 1881 and in October 1884 the Society founded the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the first public gallery in Aotearoa New Zealand. He died in February 1898 and this Memorial Lecture recognises the importance of Hodgkins to the city’s cultural life. His daughter Frances Hodgkins was an artist of repute, whose work is in collections both private, and public.
The Memorial Lecture for 2020 will be delivered by Vincent O’Sullivan, noted poet, novelist, short story writer and playwright. The lecture is on the life and works of one of Aotearoa’s most admired artists, Ralph Hotere, with special attention to the works produced while Hotere was living in Ōtepoti Dunedin.
The lecture will be at 3pm SUNDAY 18 OCTOBER 2020
