New Rear Window Project
5 October 2021
This week the gallery has welcomed Summer Breeze (2014), a video work by Denise Batchelor, to the Rear Window.
Based in the Hokianga, Batchelor has recently been undertaking a major research project exploring the lifeforce of Kauri forests with the support of the Department of Conservation. Summer Breeze is an example of her approach to documenting personal encounters with nature, focusing on quiet moments of contemplation within her immediate surroundings. In this case, as we watch, an adventurous wētā creates a small disruption within the threshold between domestic space inside and the natural world outside.
