Isaiah Okeroa

New in the Rear Window

26 June 2024

This week we are pleased to launch Kiwa (2023) by Isaiah Okeroa (Taranaki, Waikato) as part of the Gallery’s Rear Window programme. Layering image and sound, Kiwa acknowledges the strength of the harakeke and the connections that weave together whānau and whakapapa. Okeroa draws on taonga pūoro, traditional Māori instruments, to shape a powerful soundscape that carries the artist’s story of reconnection across time and place.

Kiwa arrives as we celebrate Matariki both as a Gallery community and across the nation. Matariki is a time of remembrance and reconnection, to take time to celebrate the present and look towards the year ahead. All are welcome to join our Matariki Hikoi and Waiata on Thursday 27th June, or bring your whānau to follow the ara whetū, or star trail, that connects us with our friends at the libraries and Toitū. Mānawatia a Matariki.
