Joanna Margaret Paul

opens at the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui

8 July 2025

In August 2021, the exhibition and publication, Joanna Margaret Paul: Imagined in the context of a room, was launched at Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Travelling to Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi in 2021-2023, the exhibition was scheduled to end its nationwide tour at the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui, following their major redevelopment project.

As the exhibition traces the key journeys that shaped Joanna Margaret Paul’s career, we are thrilled that this exhibition will open at the Sarjeant Gallery on 12 July 2025. As the DPAG’s project partner, it is important that this exhibition finds a home in the Sarjeant’s gallery spaces. But more than that, Paul settled in Whanganui in 1985, where she found a supportive creative and literary community. Based there for the rest of her career, many of her works reflect her views and experiences of Whanganui.

Please visit the Sarjeant’s website for further details.
