Meet the Zavros's

11 November 2025

Visit the Gallery this weekend and step into the world of leading Australian artist Michael Zavros. In his first major exhibition in Aotearoa New Zealand, Zavros’s painstakingly detailed paintings will amaze audiences, while highlighting the instability of the images that flood our modern lives. Appearing to open the door to his home and studio, the performative nature of Zavros’s portraits blurs the line between fact and fiction. Bringing together works from collections throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia, Meet the Zavros’s considers ideas of beauty, commodity, and desire, and how these things have shaped society and identity across the ages. The exhibition also includes a new site-specific commission produced on residency in Ōtepoti Dunedin as part of the Gallery’s International Visiting Artist Programme.

To celebrate the opening of this exhibition, on Saturday 15th November at 11am Michael Zavros will be speaking in the exhibition with curators Lauren Gutsell and Lucy Hammonds.
