New Acquisition

John Barr Hoyte

19 October 2021

This week, we’re pleased to highlight a recent addition to the gallery’s collection, [From Dunedin Eastwards towards the Harbour Entrance with Port Chalmers Town on the left] (c.1872-79) by John Barr Hoyte.

Born in England, Hoyte (1835-1913) immigrated to Aotearoa around 1860 and travelled extensively around the country to paint, spending a number of years in Ōtepoti Dunedin. The watercolour landscape is characteristic of his subject matter and style. It compliments existing works in the gallery’s collection that help to tell the many stories of the Otago harbour and capture the shifting ways artists have responded to this part of the world.
