Marie Shannon: The Rooms in the House
4 November 2025
Acquired by Dunedin Public Art Gallery in 2017, The Rooms in the House (2016) by Marie Shannon rounds out the Gallery’s Rear Window Moving Image Programme for 2025. Working across photography and moving image, many of Shannon’s works hinge on relationships – the people, objects and evidence of personal interactions enacted through the course of everyday life. With the concepts of time, distance and memory often playing critical roles in her work, The Rooms in the House is archival in nature. Presented as a sequence of text, the work captures Shannon’s now-adult son describing, in a rational and unsentimental way, his memories of the contents of his childhood home.
The Rooms in the House will be on display in the Rear Window Gallery until 8 February 2026.
