Nicola Farquhar

Stars, lands

14 May 2024

Opening on Saturday 18 May, Nicola Farquhar: Stars, lands is a new exhibition developed out of the Gallery’s Aotearoa New Zealand Visiting Artist Programme. Based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Nicola Farquhar has spent time living and working in Ōtepoti Dunedin over recent months, producing a new body of work for the exhibition. Themes of metamorphosis and regeneration, language and storytelling, wider cosmic mysteries, geometry, planetary bodies and systems, and our relationship to the natural world are explored through paint, moving image and the written word.

This exhibition includes a publication, Stars, lands, which brings together a collection of writing selected by Farquhar. These poems and excerpts provide a glimpse into what the artist has been reading while developing the exhibition at Dunedin Public Art Gallery, and the important role reading and storytelling have within Farquhar’s practice.

The authors in Stars, lands include Bora Chung, Janet Frame, Alison Glenny, Patricia Grace, Xiaolu Guo, Bernadette Hall, Caspar Henderson, Kim Hyesoon, Adriana Che Ismail, Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle, Stanislaw Lem, Emma Neale, Nina Mingya Powles, Alice Paalen Rahon, Mary Shelley, and Ruby Solly.

The publication Stars, lands will be available to read in the exhibition and available to purchase in the Gallery shop.

Please join us on Saturday 18 May at 11.30am for a talk with Nicola Farquhar in her exhibition Stars, lands.
