Peter Hawkesby
Heart Basket & other work
17 February 2026
This weekend we welcome visitors to Heart Basket & other work, a new exhibition by Peter Hawkesby. A legend in Aotearoa New Zealand ceramics, Hawkesby moved to Ōtepoti Dunedin in 2020. Setting up a studio in the central city, he has spent the past five years developing substantial new works that process and extend on ideas and forms that have accumulated over his long career working in clay.
On Saturday 21st February at 11am, I’ll be in the gallery to introduce Heart Basket & other stories. For those wanting a unique view into how these works are made, there will be an opportunity to join Peter Hawkesby at the Gallery for a demonstration of his hand building techniques at 11am, Saturday 9 May.
Heart Basket & other work is part of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery’s ongoing exhibition series Suite, which explores recent work by artists living and working in Ōtepoti Dunedin. Over 2026, Suite takes the form of an exhibition series in BNZ Gallery on the ground floor, so keep an eye on our website and social media for details.
