Prayers & Declarations

9 December 2025

On Saturday 13th December, Prayers & Declarations: Exploring art and Christian faith will open at Dunedin Public Art Gallery. This exhibition looks across the historic and contemporary collections of the DPAG, supplemented by loans from Uare Taoka o Hākena Hocken Collections and private collections, to consider how stories, themes and iconography relating to Christianity and faith have appeared in artists’ work across time. Spanning from the mid-14th century to the contemporary moment, Prayers & Declarationsbrings together painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and moving image – inviting audiences to consider how artists have continued to explore Christian subjects and symbolism in a wide range of ways.

Prayers & Declarations includes works by Bartholomäus Bruyn, Jacopo del Casentino, Albrecht Dürer, Luca Giordano, John Hutton, Ralph Hotere, Christine Webster, Chris Ulutupu, Colin McCahon, Jeffrey Harris, John Reynolds, Mary Beth Edelson and many others.
