Sriwhana Spong
Rear Window
20 October 2026
This week, Sriwhana Spong’s Beach Study (2012) was installed in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery’s Rear Window gallery, rounding out the 2026 moving image programme. A work that explores memory, instability, and the line between public and private, Beach Study was filmed at a secluded bay on Waiheke Island using 16mm film and colour filters. Informed by a series of negotiations and drawing on her experiences of this location as both a child and an adult (and trained dancer), the artist’s encounters with this place are translated into movement through a series of small choreographies.
With a continued focus on exhibiting moving image works by artists working in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond, the Rear Window moving image programme for 2027 has been curated by Ihupukutaka Kairauhī Curatorial Intern, Sarah McGaughran. The 2027 programme will include works by Xi Li, Sarah Hudson and Rachel Anson, Jamie Berry, Laura Duffy, and Russ Flatt.
Sriwhana Spong’s Beach Study will be screening in the Rear Window gallery until 24 January 2027.
