Te Wiki o te Reo Māori at DPAG

Kia ora koutou,

There are many ways for everyone to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori at Dunedin Public Art Gallery this year. Extend your te reo Māori and your knowledge of mahi toi using the bi-lingual panels that guide visitors through Te Ahikāroa and other exhibitions across the whare toi.

Make yourself comfortable at te wāhi kēmu, the games table in our main foyer. Have a go using our selection of te reo Māori games, activities and books, there’s something for everyone, from tamariki to pakeke, children to adults. Use the pens and crayons in Playspace to colour in your own āniwaniwa with all the colours of the rainbow. 

Join the Dunedin City Council rōpū waiata at the Dunedin City Library at 11am on Rāpare 17 Hepetema, Thursday 17 September, for an open practice. This group was established in 2002 as a Te Wiki o te Reo Māori initiative, and this will mark their 24th year together. Come along and enjoy singing with our rōpū! Songsheets will be provided.

New to the galleries this month is I rongo i tō tohu – Heard your message, our final exhibition in Suite 2026 which brings together new works by Ōtepoti Dunedin-based artist Georgina May Young (Te Ūpokorehe, Te Whakatōhea, Irish, Scottish). Young’s works include raranga, weaving, and embroidery that centre taonga materials such as muka, houhere, and mānono. Toro mai ki te whakaaturanga kia rapua ngā tohu ki roto i tā Georgina mahi toi – come and visit the exhibition to see if you can find the messages in Georgina’s works.
