This week, which is Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa / Samoa Language Week 2022, we are celebrating the first week of The Fall, by Christopher Ulutupu – the 2022 Dunedin Public Art Gallery Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa Visiting Artist. This cinema scale, two-channel video installation unfolds over a series of chapters, in which Ulutupu reflects on the instability of the world, and particularly a post-colonial discourse around the dismantling of capitalism. In his work he simply asks the question ‘what happens when it all falls away?’ Intimate, surreal, challenging, and tender, The Fall is an important new work that opens space to consider what might endure, collapse, or indeed triumph, in the wake of a changing world.
