Frances Hodgkins

Between Croft and Corfe

15 April 2023 - 23 July 2023

Drawn primarily from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery collection, this exhibition focuses on work made during the later period of Frances Hodgkins’ career, from the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s. Over this period, Hodgkins lived on the south-west peninsula of England, with much of her time spent in Corfe Castle village in Dorset and Bradford-on-Tone in Somerset. The paintings in this exhibition explore Hodgkins’ relationship to the landscape, to rural life as subject matter, to interior and exterior spaces, and to the opportunities offered by travel – something that was greatly impacted by World War II.
