Broken Spectre

Making his exhibition debut in Aotearoa New Zealand, Richard Mosse has an internationally renowned practice that builds and extends the language of documentary film and photography to draw attention to urgent stories of armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, and environmental crimes. Filmed over a three-year period, Broken Spectre (2022) presents Mosse’s response to the unfolding impacts of the destruction and degradation of the Amazon Rainforest. Using specialised cinematic and scientific imaging technologies and shifting scales and wavelengths, Broken Spectre takes the viewer deep into the interconnected ecosystems of the Amazon Basin and to the frontlines of the environmental catastrophe.
Broken Spectre was co-commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria, VIA Art Fund, the Westridge Foundation, and the Serpentine Galleries. Additional support was provided by Collection SVPL and Jack Shainman Gallery.
