10 April 2021 - 22 June 2021

In 2020 the Dunedin Public Art Gallery was thrilled to acquire what was or could be today (again)(2019) by Shannon Te Ao (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Wairangi, Te Pāpaka-a-Māui). Working across video, photography and performance, Te Ao’s work often explores the subtleties and complexities of themes such as love, loss, intimacy, language and identity. what was or could be today (again) focuses on endurance athlete Ngarama Milner-Olsen as she swims across Aotearoa’s largest body of water, Taupō-nui-a-Tia. The work features an original song written by Te Ao and Kurt Komene (Te Atiawa, Taranaki Whānui), performed in te reo Māori by Te Awhina Kaiwai-Wanikau (Ngāti Tūwharetoa).
