In Bloom was developed by Steve Carr as part of his 2020 residency at McCahon House, Titirangi. A series of planters was assembled from discarded car tyres, cast in bronze and emblazoned with Carr’s name and exhibition title. The tyres carry the language of use, reuse and reincarnation – from car culture to planter boxes, retaining walls, tyre swings, and a multitude of other applications in between. Pushing against the static nature of public sculpture, In Bloom is filled with a changing selection of plants, reimagined by local designers at each stage of its seasonal journey around Aotearoa. Timed for the months of winter, In Bloom will arrive at Dunedin Public Art Gallery in June, its arrangement designed in collaboration with Estelle Flowers.
